'Pray for Us': Hurricane Irma Hammers Florida; More Than 1.5 Million Lose Power

As Hurricane Irma's devastating blow to Florida's southernmost point worsened Sunday morning, officials warned anyone who stayed that they were on their own until the storm's impacts waned.

In South Florida, more than 1.5 million homes and businesses were in the dark early Sunday morning. Florida Power and Light reported that over half of its outages were in Miami-Dade County. The company told the Associated Press that it expects millions more to lose power, with some areas seeing prolonged outages.

"The first thing I ask everybody to do is pray for us," Florida Gov. Rick Scott told ABC News Sunday morning.

Emergency officials said anyone who calls for help Sunday on the Florida Keys will not receive a response, as all emergency services have ended until at least Monday, CBS12.com reported. Collier County declared a civil emergency and ordered all residents to shelter in place Sunday morning. Miami Beach also said it would not respond to emergency calls until conditions improved.

"It's a beautiful place and I'm just very scared to see what it's going to look like when the storm passes," storm chaser Mike Theiss told The Weather Channel Sunday morning from Key West.
