Heatwave spreads into Arctic - and could have terrifying effects

It’s not just Britain: temperatures worldwide are smashing records, and one scientist has warned of the effects in the Arctic.

Last week saw record-breaking temperatures including the highest night-time temperature ever recorded on the planet in Oman – and in the Arctic, the effects could be even worse.

Meteorologist Nick Humphrey, author of the ‘Ocean’s Wrath’ blog, says that the area is seeing a ‘true roasting’ and it could have effects on sea ice.

Humphrey says, ‘Climate change has sent temps skyrocketing in the far north of the planet over just the past 20 years.

‘While that’s been quite reflected in the rapid rise in wintertime temperatures, it’s increasingly being reflected in summertime temperatures as more and more sea ice disappears earlier in the season, leaving more dark blue ocean to absorb more daytime sunlight.

‘All of this very abnormal heat over the high latitude landmasses, overspreading the peripheral seas of the Arctic Ocean continues to cause substantial and persistent decrease in daily sea ice volume in the Arctic and surrounding areas.’

Last week, Friederike Otto of the University of Oxford, who researched last summer’s heatwave said, ‘Summers keep getting hotter.’
‘Heatwaves are far more intense than when my parents were growing up in the 1950s.
‘If we do nothing to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, the kind of extreme heat we saw this past summer will be the norm when my young son is a grown man.’
