Hurricane Irma: Palm Beach County shortens curfew; 100 arrested in all

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office authorities have arrested 100 people since Sunday for violating the county’s Hurricane Irma curfew, according to numbers released Tuesday by the sheriff’s office.

About half of those booked into the county’s jail on the county ordinance violation charge face additional charges, from DUI and drug-related charges to burglary and probation-violation offenses, records show.

Palm Beach County’s revised curfew runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the wake of Hurricane Irma, effective immediately. West Palm Beach also revised its curfew to the same hours, city police said Tuesday morning.

The initial county curfew was implemented at 3 p.m. Saturday in order “to protect Palm Beach County from looters and other individuals,” County Administrator Verdenia Baker said.

Law-enforcement authorities have arrested several people, including two juveniles and 22-year-old Austin Johnson, on looting-related charges in the wake of Irma. Johnson and the juveniles are accused of robbing a Shell gas station near West Palm Beach during a state of emergency Monday.
