Australia to sweat through another extreme heatwave as temperatures soar to 41C in Sydney and officials issue health warnings as the scorching summer continues
Australia's scorching summer will continue on Thursday following weeks of extreme heatwave conditions.
Temperatures in Sydney's west are set to soar to 41C before a cooler change briefly sweeps the nation.
Bureau of Meteorologist forecaster Rebecca Farr said the current heatwave conditions have been brought about by a stubborn high pressure system.
'What we have been seeing is a high pressure system over the Tasman Sea and a trough inland drawing warm air from Northern Australia into the state,' she said.
'This pattern has been very consistent and quite stationary over the past month, so we have been seeing very warm temperatures.'
A cool change is on its way across NSW and is expected to arrive on Friday.
'We are having a front move through the southern parts of the state later on Thursday, and that is bringing some cooler air behind it,' Ms Farr said.
The low intensity heatwave is expected to pick back up again by Saturday across NSW and southern Queensland.
Western Australia through to western parts of the Northern Territory should also expect heatwave conditions over the coming days.
Canberra and Perth will both reach high 30s on Thursday, while Hobart and Melbourne's temperatures drop to a low of 18C.
The NSW Department of Health has issued a warning to help people beat the heat.
They encourage people to stay hydrated, keep cool and keep up to date with weather forecasts.
