SINABUNG, SUMATRA EXPLODES TO 50,000 FEET (15.2KM) — DIRECT COOLING EFFECT

As Bali’s Mount Agung steals all the headlines — with it’s volcanic-sneeze to 15,000 feet grounding flights and dusting 9 villages with ash — a much MUCH stronger explosion is blowing almost unnoticed today, May 25, at Sumatra’s Sinabung Volcano, Indonesia.

The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin has warned of a colossal volcanic ash plume rising to 50,000 feet (15.2km), or flight level 500, from northern Sumatra’s powerful stratovolcano — Sinabung.

Particulates ejected to altitudes above 32,800 feet (10km), and into the stratosphere, have a direct cooling effect on the planet.

Sinabung woke in 2010 after centuries of quiescence, according to volcano.si.edu .

That eruptive phase registered as VEI 2, and would turn out to be just a precursor to the powerful episode lasting from Sept 5, 2013 to Jul 15, 2018, which registered as a 4 on the VEI.

Mount Sinabung kicked back into life in early May, 2019, with this latest eruption ranking as the largest in years, and coming just days after the PVMBG lowered the alert status for the volcano from the highest Level 4 down to 3.
