Typhoon Rai hit the southeastern Philippines

Typhoon Rai hit the southeastern Philippines, flooding villages, tearing down trees and roofs, and knocking out power as nearly 100,000 people were evacuated. The coast guard says it has grounded all vessels, stranding passengers and ship workers.

Several mostly domestic flights have been canceled and schools and workplaces were closed in the most vulnerable areas. The storm made landfall in Siargao, a popular tourist island, packing winds of about 175km/h (110mph).

Rai is one of the strongest typhoons to hit the South-East Asian country this year.
