Will this year be a white Christmas in the UK?

map : meteociel.fr

The last widespread white Christmas in the UK was in 2010. It was extremely unusual, as not only was there snow on the ground at 83% of stations (the highest amount ever recorded) but snow or sleet also fell at 19% of stations.

Since the 60s, the UK’s winters have become less snowy; overall, it’s because of the warming of our climate. It’s no coincidence that 2020 was one of the least snowy years on record and one of the warmest. It doesn’t only affect snow, it also affects rain. Last year was also the fifth wettest.

Now the Meteorological Office says unsettled weather is expected towards the end of next week, with ‘snow possible for some places’.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said wintry weather is likely if Britain is hit by an area of low pressure from the south, which would lead to a bitter, easterly airflow. He added: ‘Eastern areas could get the chance of snow.’‘It’s too early to say whether this will happen. An alternative scenario would see low pressure moving in from the Atlantic, which would bring warm, wet air. It’s a waiting game.’
