Massive waterspout spins up off Israeli coast
An impressive sight was seen off the coast of southern Israel on Monday
as a massive waterspout danced its way through the waters of the Mediterranean
Sea.
The unusual weather phenomenon, which resembles a tornado, was caught
off-shores of the southern city of Ashdod.
A waterspout is an intense columnar vortex, that occurs over masses of water,
scooping up vapor and dragging it towards the sky. And while the impressive
spout may look like a tornado, the strong winds created don't actually pull
much water.
The waterspout tends to occur when temperatures are cold and the water source
is still quite warm. And while the slender tornados can be dangerous for
boaters and shoreline locations, they do not pose any real threat further
inland since they collapse soon after they move onshore.
The temperatures in Israel began to plummet over the last weekend, as local
showers washed and continue to wash different parts of the country over the
past few days.
