Livecam from Dolomites-Alps

The Three Peaks of Lavaredo are three separate peaks in the Sesto Dolomites of northeastern Italy.

It is one of the most famous groups of peaks in the Alps.

The three peaks, from east to west, are:

  • Cima Piccola / Kleine Zinne (“small peak 2,857m”)
  • Cima Grande / Große Zinne (“big peak 2,999m”)
  • Cima Ovest / Westliche Zinne (“west summit 2,973m”).

Until 1919 the peaks formed part of the border between Italy and Austria. They are now on the border between the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno and are still part of the linguistic boundary between German-speaking and Italian-speaking majorities. Cima Grande has an altitude of 2,999 meters. It is located between Cima Piccola, at 2,857 meters, and Cima Ovest, at 2,973 meters.

Dolomites

The Dolomites are a mountain range in northeastern Italy, part of the Alps. A national park and several local parks are spread over the area. In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a World Heritage Site. The name “Dolomites” comes from the famous French mineralogist Deodat Dolomier, the first to describe dolomite, a type of rock that gave these mountains their characteristic shapes and colors. They were formerly called “pale mountains” and acquired the name by which they are known today during the 19th century.
