Silfra: The crack that separates America from Europe

This area is full of valleys, volcanoes, faults and hot springs, which are caused by the movement of tectonic plates by 2 cm (0.8 inches) each year.

Silfra in Iceland is one of the most popular diving destinations. The reason;
Divers have the unique opportunity to swim between a small opening created between two tectonic plates and essentially between two continents: North America and Europe.

It is essentially a huge crack - which widens by about two centimeters each year - on the surface of the earth, where the continental plates meet.

In the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean this crack is completely invisible, but in Silfra the water is so clear from the melting of Iceland's glaciers that it becomes fully visible.

The gap between the two continental plates leads to a cave of 600 meters, while the water has a temperature of -4 ° C as it comes from the melting of glaciers.
