Two Additional Bodies Found on Erupting Indonesian Volcano, Death Toll Reaches 13
Rescue efforts resumed on Mount Marapi, Indonesia, as two more bodies were discovered, raising the death toll to 13 following the weekend eruption.
The search for the remaining 10 missing hikers continued on Tuesday amid ongoing volcanic activity. The eruption, which sent a 3km ash cloud into the air, prompted the evacuation and treatment of most of the 75 hikers present during the incident.

Despite challenges posed by the slippery terrain, hundreds of rescuers pressed on in their race against time. Mount Marapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, has a history of eruptions, with its deadliest occurring in 1979, claiming 60 lives.
The volcano’s monitoring station reported continued activity, with five eruptions observed on Tuesday. Video footage captured the vast spread of volcanic ash, covering roads and vehicles, while rescuers faced difficulties transporting the injured down the mountain. Burn victims were promptly taken to hospitals, underscoring the hazardous conditions faced by those affected.
